Diwali or Deepawali is one of the biggest festivals of Hindus in India. Diwali is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm and happiness. Diwali is celebrated for 5 continuous days, with the 3rd day being celebrated as the main Diwali or the “Festival of Lights”. During this time, crackers ad various other fireworks are displayed and look lovely in the clear night sky.

At Diwali, people wear new clothes, and decorate their houses with colorful diyas and candles. It is believed that light will remove all the evil spirits and bring peace and happiness in every home. Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evening to seek the divine blessings of the Goddess of Wealth. During Diwali, gifts are exchanged among all near and dear ones and sweets are made in the homes.
The auspicious day of Diwali is decided by the moon position and according to the Hindu calendar, it is during Amavasya or the “no moon day” that Diwali can be held. The dark night comes after every fortnight and in the Hindu month of Kartik, that is in October or November, the festive occasion comes.
It is said that Diwali is held to mark the day with Lord Rama’s coronation ceremony as the King of Ayodhya after his return to the kingdom from 14 years of exile along with his wife Sita and brother Laxmana after killing the demon King Ravana. People celebrate this day by lighting candles and other lights and driving away the darkness of Amavasya.
