Enter big band leader Artie Shaw’s name and you’re likely to also hear from the likes of Benny Goodman, Harry James, Johnny Hodges and Tommy Dorsey…just to name a few.
Type in blues legend Robert Johnson and you will also likely find yourself listening to Huddie Ledbetter a.k.a. Leadbelly, Charlie Patton, Rev. Robert Wilkins…even Bob Dylan.
Like Last FM, Pandora Internet Radio, an offshoot of the music genome project, helps listeners find music they may be unfamiliar with simply by listing a song or artist they already enjoy. The new “station” the listener creates selects and plays music based on the original pick.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Modern DJ’s do plenty of creative stuff beyond simply playing records these days…backspins, phasing scratching, beat juggling etc.
But let’s face it, the basic premise that started the DJ revolution, that a guy standing in front of an audience or broadcasting over the airwaves and playing records or CD’s could replace a band both in cost effectiveness and versatility, is in serious jeopardy.
Not to mention possibly the most important of DJ functions as guides to taste. And tools like ubroadcast basically let every listener create their own radio station with music uploaded from their iPod or PC.
